What Is Lumo?

What Is Lumo?

LUMO is a web-based platform built for the realities of remote education today. It was designed to meet the real needs of teachers and students, from pedagogy to technology to emotional connection.

Instead of focusing only on content delivery, LUMO offers a complete, AI-powered environment that supports engagement, personalization, and progress tracking helping educators deliver richer, more responsive learning experiences.

The Spark Behind LUMO

The Spark Behind LUMO

The idea for LUMO came when my mom left a 30-year tech career to become a teacher and discovered just how far behind schools are.

Watching her struggle sparked something in me.
I decided to design a better digital learning experience, combining thoughtful UX, smart technology, and the power of AI to create a solution that makes remote learning more intuitive, connected, and effective, for both students and teachers.

The Rise of AI in Education

The Rise of AI in Education

Artificial Intelligence is reshaping nearly every industry and education is finally catching up. In a world where personalized experiences and instant insights have become the norm, AI offers groundbreaking opportunities to transform how we teach and learn.

Here’s how AI is unlocking new value in the classroom:

Methodology & Process

To understand the real needs of teachers and students in the context of remote learning, I began by immersing myself in existing academic and practical knowledge. I explored pedagogical models, cognitive development theory, and recent studies focused on digital learning environments, motivation, and curiosity-driven learning.

This foundational research helped me frame the right questions and identify meaningful patterns to look out for in the field.

After building a strong theoretical foundation, I conducted field research across five schools:

  • 1 elementary school

  • 2 middle schools

  • 2 high schools

I observed both in-person classes and live Zoom lessons. These observations allowed me to witness firsthand how students and teachers interact with technology in both physical and digital classrooms.

Teacher & Student Interviews

To complement my field observations, I conducted 45
in-depth interviews with a range of stakeholders:

30 teachers

10 students

5 school principals

3 Things I Couldn't Ignore

After analyzing dozens of interviews and observations across physical and digital classrooms, I distilled the following three insights that stood out most clearly across the board.

Two Sides, One Mission

teachers

LUMO is designed for teachers across ages and levels of digital confidence, from tech-savvy educators to those still adapting to digital tools. Its intuitive interface, AI-powered tips, and ready-made templates simplify lesson creation and reduce prep time, so teachers can focus on what matters most: teaching.

Students

Today’s students grow up with a screen in hand swiping, searching, and interacting from an early age. Their digital fluency is high, and their expectations for intuitive, fast, and engaging experiences are even higher. LUMO leverages that fluency to drive curiosity and participation: its interface is playful yet structured, empowering students to explore, collaborate, and stay focused, independently and actively.

Tailored Practice & Reflection

At the end of each lesson, students receive a personalized summary of their performance, complete a short reflection, and get follow-up exercises tailored to the topics where they need extra support.

Lumo Create is a tool that allows teachers to easily and quickly turn any idea or activity into a complete digital lesson. With the help of an
AI-powered smart assistant, teachers can generate presentations, personalized exercises, group activities, breaks, and discussions within seconds, while maintaining full control to edit, customize, and enhance the content.

What if teachers really had “eyes in the back
of their heads”?

The teachers gain access to a new world of
smart data and real-time visibility, including
live and post-lesson metrics on each student’s understanding, participation, and progress.

Centralized Classroom Management

The system provides a clear overview of each class, compares performance across classrooms, and reveals trends that were previously invisible.

Lesson Summary for Teachers

After each activity, teachers get an instant overview of student understanding, including which concepts were clear, which weren’t, and which exercises were most challenging.

What I Learned

What I Learned

Designing Lumo deepened my understanding of how real-world educational needs translate into digital products. I learned how to extract clear design goals from qualitative research, balance simplicity with innovation, and design for users with vastly different digital skill levels, all while staying rooted in pedagogical impact.

Next Steps

Next Steps

Looking ahead, I would explore pushing Lumo’s visual language further, integrating 3D elements, subtle motion, and a more tech-forward aesthetic. These upgrades could better reflect the platform’s innovative core and resonate more with digital-native students, while still remaining accessible to teachers.
